When it comes to choosing his final meal, noise rock guitarist/vocalist Chris Spencer of Unsane and The Cutthroats 9, a New York native who’s now living in California, wants one kind of food only: seafood! And lots of it!
Spencer: Do I get as much stuff as I want?
Oh yeah. You can start rattling things off if you want.
Wow, I would says Dungeness crab, Maine lobster, both of them steamed, some spot prawns, some asparagus and some boiled potatoes with shallots.
So you’re going the seafood route, then?
Oh yeah, definitely. I’m from New York, so that’s where the lobster comes in. Me and my friend used to go crabbing, so we’d eat them all of the time.
And if those offerings were brought to your cell on a huge platter, that would be enough for you to feel at peace?
[Laughs] Yep, ready to die.
Did you ever do lobster boils back home?
Yeah, I used to date a girl who lived in Maine. We like those giant clams that they eat, too.
I heard those boils are a whole experience; it’s not just about the food. I mean, you wouldn’t be able to do it sitting in a cell somewhere on death row, but it’s usually a real community event, isn’t it?
Totally. With her, her family got together and she actually worked on a lobster boat for awhile and they’d go out and grab a bunch of them. I think we had, like, 35 lobster one time. So we’d cook them on the beach with corn and potatoes, and a lot of beer, just hanging out and eating a giant meal with the family.
But back to death row… would you share your lobster with the prison guards?
No way. Well, maybe if they were nice.
