There’s no rule over here at Rice and Bread that says that every one of our Death Row Dinner participants has to pick a final meal. And when it comes to Laura Jane Grace, the very person who penned our website’s namesake song (“Rice and Bread” is also one of our favourite Against Me! tunes), we are more than willing to bend the rules. So, it turns out that Grace wouldn’t want to eat a final meal at all if she was on death row, for a variety of practical reasons. Read on…
Grace: You know what, I wouldn’t want a final meal. I don’t like the idea that you eat this big meal and then you’re executed and there’s all of this fucking food in your belly that decomposes, and then you have a lot of gas. It just seems like it makes your corpse a lot more smelly. So I would pass on a last meal, and I would tell them to go fuck themselves. [Laughs]
That’s a good way to go, I think. People are always wanting to choose a huge steak or whatever…
Yeah, can you imagine that?! Someone is eating a big steak, ice cream, a bunch of cake, mashed potatoes, and then they’re electrocuted? It’s gnarly. It’s so gnarly.
I still want to ask you though, what is your favourite thing to eat?
One of the games we’ll sometimes play when Against Me! on the road is, “Okay, you can only eat one food for the rest of your life. What would it be?” I think, if it came down to it, I would choose sushi, just because there are lots of different versions of it. You can always find something new that you haven’t had before, and it’s also really good for you. And sushi is satisfying and doesn’t make you feel bad after you eat it. So, I would go with sushi, as a food genre, and without picking a specific kind of roll. [Laughs]
Have you run across a really good sushi restaurant on your travels that really stands out?
Oh yeah, all the time, sure. I’m trying to think of one in particular that pops out but, shit man, I’ve been to Japan three times this year, and there are really good sushi restaurants in America, too.
