The Cutthroats 9
For the less discerning listener, Chris Spencer’s two bands, The Cutthroats 9 and Unsane, might seem very similar in musical style. Both feature Spencer screaming his face off. Both have the rumbling throttle of a runaway semi-trailer truck. Both are loud as fuck. But listen closer and you may notice some major differences. And if not, here’s Spencer himself to tell you what they are: Different drummer Spencer: [The Cutthroats 9 drummer] Will [Carroll] is way different from [Unsane drummer] Vinnie [Signorelli]. Will just plays constantly and does a lot of different stuff, where Vinnie is more of a minimalist. Different people Spencer: With any band, the members make the chemistry. We have a different drummer and a different bassist, so it just has a very different feel to it. Different vibe Spencer: It’s not so urban, “I’m going to kill you” as Unsane is. I’m playing slide guitar all of the time in Cutthroats; we’re having fun. It’s still pretty intense and fast-paced, but it’s not quite as confrontational, let’s say. Different songwriting Spencer: With Cutthroats, and this new album, especially, I just wanted to play slide a lot, so I wanted to write material where I just get to do it all of the time. So I went in with that perspective and play slide a lot, but not have it be too cheesy, bluesy, where you don’t sound like goddamn Blues Traveler or something. -Jason Schreurs The Cutthroats 9’s Dissent is out now on Lamb Unlimited.
