Hendrix’s Winterland most played for Chris Spencer of The Cutthroats 9

On July 16, 2014

Jimi-Hendrix-Experience-Winterland-(8-LP-+-1CD-Box-Set)-(Amazon

Usually our guest reviewers talk about new releases that they’ve been spinning the most lately. But in the case of The Cutthroats 9/Unsane guitarist/vocalist Chris Spencer, the one music release he’s been spinning most is a posthumous live Jimi Hendrix box set that came out in 2011. And who are we to argue with a guy who’s been pummelling us with his signature confrontational noise rock for decades?

Spencer: The other day I found this record, it’s actually eight records, but it’s this whole box set of Jimi Hendrix at Winterland and I’ve left it on non-stop. I’ve been listening to that one a lot.

Is this something that you found used?
Yeah, it’s an old record. Me and a friend have a record label called Lamb Unlimited that we run out of an old record store, so he just happened on it and he knows I like Hendrix, so he said, “Here, check this out.” But, yeah, it’s eight records deep, man, so it’s big.

Did you say it’s all live?
Yeah, it’s all recordings of live stuff from the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco.

How can there be eight records worth of material?
He played a lot of shows there and he’d go on forever, I guess.

Sounds like you’re a big fan. What is it about Hendrix that’s always been a thing for you?
I don’t know. He’s just different. He’s a different kind of guitar player.

Would you say you’ve been influenced or inspired by him over the years?
Yeah, I guess so. Him and like Flipper and Killing Joke.

That’s a good combo. You’re covering all of the bases.
Yeah, for sure, all over the place.

Have you ever talked to anyone that’s seen Hendrix live?
Well, when I was a kid I met this one guy that said he did a shit-load of mushrooms with Hendrix but, other than that, no. But I would have to assume that he saw him live if he did mushrooms with him.
