We all have special attachments to certain music and food. One of the things we’ve found over here at Rice and Bread after doing the Death Row Dinners features for the past few months is that a lot of people go directly to comfort food when asked what they would choose for their final meal. Metz guitarist/vocalist Alex Edkins does just that, picking one of his favourite childhood meals.
So, you’re on death row and they come and ask you what you want for your final meal, and you have to tell the guards something.
Edkins: Oh my goodness! That’s dark. [Laughs] Hmm, what would it be?
Anything you want, and as much of it as you want.
I guess it would be something my Oma made, so that’s my Dutch grandma… it would be an endless supply of her tomato soup.
Is it just a straight tomato soup, or what?
It’s tomato with meatballs. It’s something that I can remember since being, I don’t know, two or three years old. It’s been there throughout my life, so that’s been the one food that I’ve had sentimental attachment to.
Well, okay, you can’t have an endless supply of it, because you do have to walk death row at some point, but how much of the soup would suffice? A hug pot of it?
Yeah, let’s just say a big pot!
Is your grandma still alive?
No.
So someone else will have to make it for you then. Who can step up to the plate?
I think my grandpa would have to make it.
Anything else with the soup? Drink? Dessert?
[Laughs] Um, maybe just a nice Scotch. There you go.
