East Coast Canadian punks Brutal Youth are making quite a name for themselves for their rambunctious live shows and hyperactive hardcore. The band, who are set to release a new 5-song EP on Paper + Plastick called Bottoming Out, keep their influences close to their hearts, so we asked singer Patty O’Lantern what his top 10 albums were. We’re super surprised that O’Lantern went with Michael Jackson over Minor Threat, but that’s okay because there are still lots of other great punk albums on his list.
Rancid - Rancid (2000)
This album is everything I wanted Brutal Youth to be when I started writing our songs. It’s still one of my all-time favourite things to listen to.
Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today
Start Today is a perfect album. There are no missed steps. Hearing it makes me want to write a record this good.
7 Seconds - Good to Go
I should probably put The Crew here instead, but honestly, to me, this album is 7 Seconds at their best. I love Kevin Second’s voice on these songs.
The Clash - Give ’em Enough Rope
I get choked up every time I hear the urgency and the sincerity in Mick Jones’ delivery of the words to “Stay Free.” The last six words of that song never fail to give me chills.
Weird Al Yankovic - Alapalooza
My music teacher in Grade 4 brought this album in to class and I loved it. Weird Al is a genius musician and a comedic messiah. His music never fails to cheer me up.
Green Day - Insomniac
I listened to this cassette so many times I wore it out and had to buy a new copy. The intro to “Panic Song” is one of my all-time favorites.
F-Minus - Suburban Blight
The sheer aggression on this album makes it one that I come back to over and over again. True, snot-nosed, fuck-you music.
Propagandhi - Less Talk More Rock
Reading the essays and the lyrics in the liner notes of this album changed the way I saw the world. I think this record had that effect on a lot of people.
Michael Jackson - Bad
This is the first cassette I have any memory of buying. I remember my mom taking me to the record store so I could pick it up.
Agent Orange - Living in Darkness
I waited five very long, pre-Internet months for this album to come in to our local record store when I special-ordered it. The first time I put it on made every second I waited worth it.
