Eyehategod screamer Mike IX Williams reveals his current musical fascination: Texas dark new-wavers Pinkish Black.
Mike: I’m freaking out on this band Pinkish Black right now. I like them a lot. They’re from Texas and they’re a really dark, really depressed version of Gary Numan [laughs]. So they’re like new wave, but sick; like really crazy.
How did you come across their stuff?
They sent me their albums and I just got them in the mail not long ago. We’ve played with them before and they’re from Texas, so they’re guys I know.
And you like their new one?
Yeah, the one I’ve been listening to is called Razed to the Ground. They’re just a great band. They’re much better live than they are on the record. Their records don’t seem to come through as depressed sounding as they do live. All it is, it’s a guy who’s got a bunch of synthesizers and a drummer who’s this really fucking heavy hittin’ guy who comes from metal and punk bands. So he’s got this punk and metal, whatever you want to call it, they’re the same thing, and he hits really hard. But the music is really dark and it’s almost new wave at times because of the keyboards, and it’s just really, really heavy. You’d have to check them out. To see them live is much better. I wanted to take them out on tour, but it didn’t work out and for whatever reason it fell apart. We like to bring bands like that on tour with us because we hate it when bands that open for us sound like us. It defeats the whole purpose of a show to me. Why would you want five bands that sound like us? It’s just like having five thrash metal bands open up for Municipal Waste.
