Mark Trombino’s top five donuts at Donut Friend

On December 9, 2014

We asked producer and musician Mark Trombino what his top five favourite donuts were at his new donut shop, Donut Friend, which features cleverly named donuts like the Fudgegazi, Chocolate from the Crypt and Poppygandhi (see the pattern here?). The guy who twiddled knobs for Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182 and many others, and hit the skins for the amazing Drive Like Jehu, admitted he’s “got more than few” favourite donuts at his shop, but he was able to narrow it down to this delectable-sounding five.

1. Javabreaker (based on Jawbreaker)
“It’s a donut that I eat probably almost every day, even still. It’s a coffee-infused donut with an espresso glaze. It’s simple, but it’s delicious, and I have one almost every day.”

2. Jets to Basil (based on Jets to Brazil)
“This is one of my favourite flavour combinations. It’s goat cheese and strawberry jam and basil inside a raised donut with balsamic glaze on top. It’s the most un-donut-y donut we have, but everyone that tries it is pretty stoked on it, and I just love it.”

3. Fritter Seems Forever (based on Further Seems Forever)
“Our apple fritter is really, really good. We caramelize the apples here; so real apples and cinnamon, and it’s really crunchy and really delicious. I love our apple fritter.”

4. Lemon Weapon (based on Legal Weapon)
“It’s lemon cream and blueberry jam inside a donut, with mint. It’s super, super yummy.”

5. Rites of Sprinkles (based on Rites of Spring)
“I’m picking this one purely for the name, because it’s my favourite name. It’s the one that just works for me on so many levels. The band is one of my all-time favourite bands; Rites of Spring is just the band that means so, so much to me as a musician. And the name is fucking cute; so cute. And it’s almost a motto for Donut Friend, too, like ‘Rites of Sprinkles’! It’s up to you! So it’s a vanilla cake donut with chocolate glaze and sprinkles, but you can also have it with a chocolate cake and sprinkles.”
