Notorious for combining fast food and rock music, Hamilton, Ontario’s B.A. Johnston takes us to the streets of where he grew up and still calls home. As a sub lover, it’s no surprise to see famous sandwich joints among his hometown favourites.
What do you remember about the food you ate growing up?
Johnston: Mother made me eat meatloaf every week. I couldn’t leave the table until it was done, or I got the dog to eat it under the table. I still fucking hate meatloaf.
If you had to pick, what would you say is Hamilton’s signature dishes?
Roma pizza. It’s a pizza that you eat cold with no cheese and it rules.
What are your favourite spots to go in your hometown?
Murph’s Subs (R.I.P.), Hutch’s, Chicago Style Pizza Shack, Queen’s Subs. I like the subs, fish and chips and pizza; top of the food chain in the steel city.
How have the foods and restaurants changed?
There are a lot more hipster burgers.
If you were to open a restaurant or food joint in Hamilton, what would it be?
I’d just re-open Murph’s Subs and I wouldn’t change anything. They wouldn’t be able to smoke behind the counter though.
