Good music is an important ingredient in any kitchen, and while there’s always a great selection of music on at Bunk Sandwiches in Portland, Oregon, there are some classic albums that go against co-owner Tommy Habetz’s punk-rock roots and top his list of favourite records of all time.
What’s the one album that you can’t get enough of that you just find through time it is just a favourite you keep putting on over and over again
Just one record?
Yeah.
Out of all the records of all time? Oh my God. I don’t know, maybe Double Nickels on the Dime by the Minutemen, or A Love Supreme by John Coltrane. This is a tough one! Oh, Making Movies by Dire Straits… I don’t know!
What is it about those albums? There is so much music now, and so much of it is forgettable, but there are those albums like Making Movies and A Love Supreme that stand the test of time.
I think about that question a lot, because I think food and music are so similar in a lot of ways. You can have something that people go crazy over initially and then it loses its flavour, whether you are talking about food or music. But I find myself, especially with kitchen work, we listen to music all the time, and I don’t know how many times I’ve heard The Pixies’ Doolittle over and over again, or Iron Maiden. There is stuff that’s beaten in your head so much, like Led Zepplin and all that classic rock, that it’s just part of popular culture and you don’t even think about it any more. It’s just like porridge or something like that. But then there are records that no matter how many times you listen to them, like Jawbreaker, and those records that you listen to over and over again and they hit you just as much as they did the first time you listen to them, and it does that same thing every time. The one I don’t understand though is Making Movies by Dire Straits. I was very much a punk-rock kid, but I listened to that record every single night when I was in high school. I love it. I just love it. It’s just so perfect in every way. It’s part you and part the artist.
