Banh mi: The only sandwich you’ll ever need

On July 24, 2014

banhmi

You’d think getting a good sandwich would be easy. Well, when it comes to the banh mi, a classic Vietnamese sandwich, it’s like a treasure hunt sometimes. I’ve lived many places that flat out don’t have a place that sells banh mi. For some people, this wouldn’t be a big deal but for me, a woman who finds these sandwiches endlessly satisfying (they have salty meat, spicy peppers, herby cilantro, tangy pickled carrots and daikon, and great bread) it’s hard to live without one for too long.

Big cities like Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle and Portland have endless options for banh mi, but move away from the cities and it becomes a bit of a struggle, which means sometimes you just have to make one yourself. To some people this may just seem like a sandwich, but until you’ve had one it isn’t really fair to say that.

While reading and perusing some of my favourite food blogs and websites, I came across an idea for the banh mi burger on Food52.com. Even though the picture above features the meats as being a mix of French country pate, Vietnamese pork and American ham, the fillings can vary from grilled pork tenderloin to lemongrass chicken and pork meatballs.

Merging the traditional banh mi with a burger is a great way to put a spin on the Vietnamese sandwich, and I’m eager to try it out soon.
