Young Widows vocalist/guitarist Evan Patterson explains his strange relationship with Iggy Pop’s The Idiot.
Evan: I have this strange relationship with Iggy Pop’s The Idiot. That record really motivated me on a lot on our new album, Easy Pain. It inspired me to go in this destructive direction. I’ve heard the record throughout my life but it never really hit me until recently. I can’t recommend a better record. The song “China Girl,” you’ve probably heard the David Bowie version 1,000 fucking times, but then you hear Iggy’s version and by the end of it he’s screaming and pouring his guts out to kinda this upbeat song, but at the same time it’s all kinda demented. I really appreciate hearing all of those things on that record that, maybe 10 years ago when I first heard it, I didn’t even fucking realize what I was listening to or what he was going for. “Mass Production,” the last song on there is probably one of my favorite songs. I’d put it in the top 10 favorite songs that I have right now. Just the creepiness and the pulse of the songs, and the mid-tempo churning of the whole record, is just perfect.
Have you thought that there might be people out there who might have a similar relationship with one of your albums?
I guess that’s the idea, yeah. It’s great. It fuels the fire.
