With seven bandmates, it can be hard to find time to listen to what you want in the tour bus. When Katie Weed, fiddle player for Los Angeles’ bluegrass/punk band Old Man Markley, finds time to pick the music, she’s influenced by what she hears on the road.
Katie: I’ve been really lucky, because lately I’ve been really into bands I’ve discovered on tour, either bands that we’ve toured with, or sometimes the best music we’ve come in contact with is what the soundpeople are playing at venues. When we were in Lubbock, Texas a couple weeks ago I heard this song and I loved it, so I searched it on that app Shazam and it was a band that was coming through town in a couple days, and I kept seeing their posters around. They are kind of similar to us, that folky rock sound and they are called Jamestown Revival. It was a new album called Utah and I’ve been listening to that on repeat. The song that I heard at the venue where I first heard this band is called “Revival” and it’s, like, halfway through the album, so I’m assuming they just put it on shuffle. It’s a great song, but it’s an 11-song album and I have already fallen in love with every track. The major highlights on the album are this great song called “Home,” and another one called “Heavy Heart.” I don’t know if these guys are brothers or just really in tune with their inflections in their voices, but there’s harmony on almost every note they sing and it’s just spot on and really beautiful harmonies. You can predict they are going to do harmonies once you’ve heard a couple songs, you know that’s how they roll, but they aren’t always super predictable notes. There is just a really strong groove. None of the songs are super fast, so you can really sink your teeth into them. They rock.
