Modest Mouse may have hit it big with “Float On,” but any true fan knows their genius lies in the tracks of the many earlier albums. For 32 Coffee Roaster owner Nathan Jantz, Modest Mouse ranks with Canadian music legend Neil Young among his favourite albums. While Nathan may have gone for overall listenability, his wife and business partner Margot’s picks were more nostalgic.
I’m sure there are a lot of times where you don’t listen to music at all while you’re roasting and you just have the hum of the roaster instead. But what is one of your favourite all-time albums to listen to?
NJ: I have a hard time not saying Modest Mouse The Moon & Antarctica. I will take huge breaks from that album, but when I hear a song again then I will want to listen to the whole album and will put it on my iPod and listen to it nonstop all over again. That’s one, for sure.
What is it about that album in particular?
NJ: The production quality is really high. It’s really intricately laced with all sorts of instruments. I also think there is a lot you can take away from the lyrics that is applicable to life, or gives some insight into life. It’s beautiful, but also experimental. I’d also have to pick a Neil Young album, but I don’t know which one I would pick, probably a live album. I can’t remember which one it is. I think it’s 20 songs and all acoustic. It was recorded in the ’70s, transitioning between two of my favourite albums.
I think it’s the Live at Massey Hall album.
NJ: Yeah, it is. I love Neil Young.
I don’t think you can be a Canadian and not like Neil Young.
MJ: I like Neil Young, but I like him here and there, maybe once a week, but listening to him constantly is a bit too much for me. Not to say I don’t like him.
Margot, what’s your all-time favourite album to listen to ever?
MJ: Can I embarrass myself? The Nitty Gritty Dirt band, or Blue Rodeo, I think it’s Five Days in July. That is going to be one of my all-time favourite bands. We got married to a song from that album. And Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, I think it is Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Those are pretty awesome album. Nathan also got me Bon Iver’s For Emma for Christmas and I love that one, too. It’s such a beautiful album.
