Photos and notes by Kim Jay
Rice and Bread was able to squeak photographer Kim Jay into the sold-out Death from Above 1979 show with guests Metz in Victoria, BC (thanks Atomique Productions!), so we asked Jay to furiously scribble as many notes on the show as she could while snapping photos and trying to avoid being crushed at the front of the stage. Considering the peril she was able to avoid while shooting and scrawling, the photos and words she came away with are pretty darn impressive.
Toronto’s Metz were a super high-energy noise rock trio who rocked out from the moment they hit the stage. I couldn’t understand anything they were signing about, but the crowd was into it. Everyone was bobbing and head banging. They played a 45-minute set and people seemed to know the words to their song “Wasted.” Also, they had no light on them at all, so they played in the shadows…
Death from Above 1979 took the stage at 10:30 pm and the lighting was better and the crowd was getting unruly. It was an older crowd; lots of weed smoking and the centre of the floor was a mosh pit. The photogs didn’t get much chance to shoot because the barrier got pushed right up to the stage and bodies were flying.
Death from Above looked like they were having fun. They were clearly too big a band for this venue. It was packed solid, right to the back of the room where the coat check was. They had their glowing elephant head on the back of the stage and the guitar player wore his classic all black with the black bob, and the drummer was wearing his signature white overalls. The crowd was really into their whole set. The floor of the venue shook and the crowd chanted “DFA” in-between songs.
