A local band called Zipgun Bomber opened up the 7 Seconds show at Brighton Music Hall in a neighbourhood in Boston, MA. The trio brought to mind old-school Green Day, but their set was a fairly low energy way to kick off the festivities.
Illinois’ The Copyrights were the first band of the tour package to play. I’ve always said that their live show betrays their music in the sense that their music deserves better. The Copyrights are one of the more talented, interesting bands playing pop-punk, but often their live show is a bit lacking of the energy that’s ever-present on their releases. Tonight, however, they were in great form and played an excellent set with an abundance of energy.
Indiana hardcore legends Zero Boys were the third act of the night. They were doing a limited, three-date run on the tour, and the Allston show was one of the three. I’ve never been a huge fan of this band on wax, but their live show is quite electric. Along with 7 Seconds, these guys were one of the two older bands on this leg of the tour, but they were able to churn out the jams with efficiency and passion and the crowd reciprocated their energy in full.
It felt like forever waiting for Nevada hardcore juggernauts 7 Seconds to take the stage. It was a wait that was more than worth it, and the band wasted no time blasting full speed ahead into their set. They played classics such as “Not Just Boys’ Fun,” “You Lose” and “This Is the Angry,” as well as songs off their newest effort, Leave a Light On. The band and crowd became one huge wave of energy smashing into each other relentlessly for the entire duration of 7 Seconds’ set.
Singer Kevin Seconds and company proved on this night that there’s a damn good reason that 7 Seconds have been playing hardcore for longer than a lot of us have been alive.
