It’s hard to believe it’s been a week already since we were at the final day of Sled Island Festival in Calgary, but here we are. The week went by in a whirlwind.
It started with our Conversation with Sandor Katz about fermentation and the bad rap that bacteria has gotten over the years. And as we were busy wrapping up our ridiculously extensive Sled Island coverage in Calgary, contributors Tracey Lindeman and Kieron Yates were busy over in Montebello, Quebec covering Amnesia Rockfest. Both festivals were raging successes after last year’s disappointing outings (flood and shit-show, respectively).
Our new feature, Band Shirts, started this past week, using Sled Island as the vehicle to spot some pretty amazing band shirts. The stories behind these shirts, and the people that wear them, are always fun times.
Mid-week saw Vancouver producer Jesse Gander picking some of his favourite local bands, and contributor Donald Kennedy talking about nausea-fighting ginger snaps in Bank-Breaking Artisan Foods.
Our feature on motorcycle-friendly food and drink spots started Thursday off with a bang and a rumble, but not before Boysetsfire/I Am Heresy singer Nathan Gray boldly donned the blinders and reviewed eight unmarked songs for Blindfold Test.
At the end of the week, we featured exclusive live footage from Sled Island in the form of Bry Webb and Joel Plaskett and then premiered Steve Brodsky of Cave In doing a Willie Nelson classic, as seen on the new All About Friends Forever compilation 7″.
If that wasn’t enough, we recounted a day spent with Calgary band Hag Face during Sled Island and talked to Misery Index’s Jason Netherton about death metal.
