Weezer’s “Surf Wax America” induces an urge to pogo and slam in a crowd reminiscent of the tumults of Atlantic waves. Now imagine those waves softening up, trance-like, in a sunset coastal vibe.
That’s what Orlando emo punk group You Blew It! has crafted for a cover of the Blue Album favorite. It’s a proper tribute to one of pop punk’s favorite bouncers, arriving as the first of five songs on their cover EP, You Blue It!. Constructed as a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original release, the band blends the essence of Weezer’s incessant stomp, while crafting the song to be uniquely You Blew It!.
We love the groundbreaking bounce of Weezer, but picture “Surf Wax America” taking a more melodic, moaned stretch. Instead of trying to play catch up or out-do Weezer, You Blew It! switched out power chords for rolling riffs, adding a bit of Florida zest. The romp is kept at the replica speed of Weezer, but softens for a subtle, airy vibe.
If you’re looking for a replica cover, consider just catching the post-hardcore geeks on tour (we’re sure they’ll play some of these songs live). But if you’re in search of a refreshed, albeit emo, take on Weezer, ready your ears for new takes on this song, “My Name Is Jonas,” “In the Garage,” “Only in Dreams” and “Susanne.”
