Food lovers, or foodies as they’ve become known, share a lot of nerdy habits, like taking pictures of their meals on their iPhones and becoming obsessed with strange food trends like donuts. They also tend to ask and answer the question, “What would your death row dinner be?” a lot. We’ll admit when we asked Nick Fauchald, creator of the Short Stack Editions, what his last meal would be if he was on death row, we suspected he’d been asked about it before, but we assumed he’d pick something fancy, or that had appeared in the pages of Food & Wine. Fauchald’s answer will surprise you, make you laugh, and reach for the peanut butter.
As someone who’s spent a lot of time in the food industry, I’m sure you’ve been asked before what your Death Row Dinner would be?
Yeah, I have, and the answer I usually give is a peanut butter and bacon sandwich on toast. It’s something my mom made a lot when I was a kid. I still think it’s the most brilliant thing, and most people probably haven’t tried it, but they should. For me, it’s the signature comfort food, and I think it’s what I would want before I was murdered.
Do you go with the all-natural, sugar-free, salt-free peanut butter? Or would you pick something like Jif?
It doesn’t matter as much. Crunchy Jif or crunchy Skippy, for me, is the best, because you have that really creamy, spreadable peanut butter that melts from the bacon and the toast, but you still have that texture to it as well. That’s what I would would pick.
